Creating a weather forecasting app with water enthusiasts in mind

Market research and the design process

My Process

Research

I was able to identify and create a user journey for my primary persona through extensive research, using methods below.

  • Card Sorting
  • Remote and In-Person User Interviews
  • User Surveys
Persona

Ideation

User research led to affinity mapping and better understanding user journeys. The most common user flow was checking for an hourly wind report over morning coffee.

User Journey Map

Wireframing and User Testing

  • Sketched concept
  • Created low fidelity wireframes in Adobe XD
  • Put wireframes in front of my target audience to validate design

Mid-Fidelity Designs and Reiterations

Testing initial wireframes led to reiterations due to some consistent user friction points, accessibility standards not being met, and preference testing.

Prototype of Final Product

Further user testing and collaboritive efforts with my classmates led to the final, clickable prototype.

Conclusion

By thoroughly researching the problem I was able to create a product that users could use to quickly check complex information. All without users needing extensive prior knowledge on reading detailed weather charts. Users can interpret the weather forecast implications for a day out on the water.
